About Cairns

Cairns è la parte “wild” della mia avventura. Philip e Tanya componevano la famiglia che mi ospitava, la loro casa non era proprio in città, quindi io e gli altri studenti, dopo scuola tendevamo a stare il più a lungo possibile in città, per poi ritornare a casa in bus più tardi. La meta preferita del dopo scuola? Bhe ovviamente la Lagoon Swimming pool che è la piscina comunale, ad un passo dal mare e con le postazioni per il BBQ gratis; si oky ma perchè andare in piscina se c’è il mare? Semplice, durante il periodo in cui sono stato a Cairns (tra novembre e dicembre) le spiagge sono popolate dalle box jellyfish (nome specifico Chironex fleckeri), ora dovete sapere che queste simpatiche meduse hanno dei tentacoli lunghi circa 3 metri, il veleno in essi contenuto causa intensi spasmi muscolari e la paralisi totale dei muscoli, cuore compreso, nel giro di 2-3 minuti… Ora capite perchè la piscina è meglio? Ah vero, non dimentichiamoci dei coccodrilli!!! come detto un posto molto wild… la regola d’oro è “se non vedi il fondo, non entrare a nuotare, potrebbero esserci dei coccodrilli” Lontano dall’acqua i pericoli sono minori, dal canto mio segnalo solo un ragno saltatore che era molto affezionato alla mia camera, diciamo che almeno una volta a settimana dovevo chiamare Philip per sfrattarlo dalla mia camera. Pericoli del luogo a parte Cairns è stata divertentissima ed inoltre qui ho fatto il mio brevetto PADI, la grande bariera corallina è da lasciarti senza fiato, quando sei laggiù a 20 metri di profondità l’unica cosa a cui pensi è ammirare i pesci, ma come detto può lasciarti senza fiato in tutti i sensi della parola, perchè bisogna fare attenzione all’ossigeno nelle bombole!!!

Cairns is the wild part of my adventure. Philip and Tanya represent the family which guested me, their home was not really close to the city, so the other students and me tended to stay as much as possible in the city and go back to home later. Which was the preferred location after school? Obviously the Lagoon Swimming pool, which is the public pool, few steps far from the sea and with free BBQs; well oky but why going to a swimming pool when there is the sea there? That is really simple, during the time I was in Cairns (November – December) the beaches are inhabited by the box jellyfish (specific name Chironex fleckeri), now you must know that these kind jellyfish have up to 3 meters tentacles and the venom inside them causes intense muscle spasms and paralysis of the muscles,heart included, within 2-3 minutes… Now do you understand why the pool is better? Ah right, do not forget the crocodiles as well!!! as I told you before, it is a really wild place… and the golden rule is “if you do not see the bottom, then do not swim into this water because there is the risk of crocodiles!!! Far from the water the danger is minor, from my side I can only tell you that I only had a jumping spider really keen on staying into my room, I had to call Philip once a week to evict the spider from my room. Beside the dangers, Cairns offers to you a lot of fun and I made my PADI license here, the great barrier reef let you breathless, when you are 20 meters in the depth the only thing you can think is admiring the fish, but as I told you it might let you breathless if you do not pay attention to the oxygen tank level!!!

Botanic Garden

Il giardino botanico di Cairns è reputato uno dei migliori giardini di piante tropicali d’Australia, questo giardino oltre alle più comuni speci di piante tropicali ha pure piante della rainforest nel nord Australia ed alcune piante provenienti dal sud est Asia. Durante la mia visita ho pure trovato degli esemplari di ragni “giganti” della grandezza di 15 centimetri circa, libellule, uno stagno con oche ed aimè ho anche sperimentato involontariamente gli effetti di alcune piante che ho accidentalmente toccato… del tipo la mia mano era color pomodoro e pizzicava fastidiosamente, se solo avessi letto prima il cartello…. Mano a parte la visita è stata divertente, anche grazie ai compagni di scuola con cui ci sono stato.

The Cairns botanic garden is known as one of the best botanic garden in Australia, this garden has the most popular tropical plants and it has even some plants from Northern Australian rainforests and Southeast Asia. During my visit I could see giant spiders which were almost 15 cm, some dragonfly and a pond with gooses. Unluckily I even experienced some negative plant effects because I accidentally touched some of them… well my hand became red like a tomato and it was really itchy, what a shame I did not see the warning panel before… Beside the hand accident the visit was really funny, thanks to the school mates whom went with me.

Cairns Tropical Zoo

Il Cairns Tropical Zoo è stato il 3° ed ultimo Zoo che ho visitato in Australia, pur essendo carini rimangono degli Zoo, preferisco vedere gli animali nel loro habitat naturale oppure nei safari, in ogni caso il solo motivo per cui ho visitato gli Zoo in Australia era per vedere i tipici animali Australiani, questo Zoo si distingue dai precedenti per la quantità di shows che propone ed inoltre vi è la possibilità di fare foto con tre diversi animali, il Koala, il coccodrillo ed il pitone dalla testa nera. Non potevo perdere l’occasine, la foto l’ho fatta con tutti e tre, inoltre ho assistito ad alcuni shows tra cui quello dei coccodrilli, dei serpenti e dei koala / wombat. Cos’altro? Ho accarezzato il mitico wombat!!!

The Cairns Tropical Zoo was the third and last Zoo I went during my staying in Australia, even if the Zoos here are nice, them remain Zoo, I personally prefer to watch the animals in their own habitat or in the safari, anyway the reason because I went to the Zoo was to watch the typical Australian’s animals, this Zoo is a bit different from the previous ones because it has a good number of shows, moreover the is the possibility to take photos with three different animals, the Koala, the crocodile and the black head python, I could not miss it, so I took the photo with all of them and I watched some shows such as the crocodile, snakes and the Koalas / wombats show. What else? I stroked the mythic wombat!!!

Cape Tribulation

Pronti per l’avventura? Allora tutti a bordo del bus in direzione di Cape Tribulation, un villaggio a nord di Cairns. Se Cairns la consideravo “wild”, Cape Tribulation lo è ancora di più, è praticamente accerchiata dalla rainforest, che si estende fino alla spiaggia ed è isolata da tutto, l’unico punto d’accesso è una stradina attraversata da un fiumiciattolo. Durante il viaggio d’andata il tempo non è stato molto clemente, vi era solo una leggera pioggierella. Una volta arrivati al campo base, il sole sembrava alle porte così io ed altri ci siamo diretti verso la spiaggia. Tutti sono rimasti impressionati dalla quantità di cartelli “pericolo coccodrilli”, praticamente ovunque vi fosse una pozza d’acqua o un fiume vi era il cartello di pericolo, vi confesso che siamo arrivati in spiaggia con un po’ di anzia facendo attenzione a cosa ci circondava… Le spiaggie qui sono abbastanza selvaggie perchè sono subito a ridosso della rainforest. Purtroppo la natura ci ha concesso solo un ora di sole, prima che un temporale di inaudita potenza si abbattesse su di noi, se mi buttavo in piscina mi bagnavo meno, in ogni caso la pioggia era persistente, quindi che fare? Un party in piscina!!! Tanto eravamo già bagnati… La pioggia cessò solamente a mezzogiorno del giorno successivo, scombussolando i nostri piani, ormai era ora di andare a fare la risalita del fiume Daintree River. Ora vi ricordate la stradina ed il fiumiciattolo? Beh ora era un fiume che sovrastava la stradina di circa 40 cm, non vi dico che ridere attraversarlo, fortunatamente il furgone non ci ha traditi e siamo riusciti nell’impresa!!! Arrivati al Daintree River siamo saliti sulle barche per la risalita del fiume alla ricerca di qualche coccodrillo, che poi abbiamo trovato 🙂  Unico obbligo della risalita: non sporgersi dalla barca e come dicono da queste parti “tutti possono nuotare nel fiume, per una volta sola però…”

Are you ready for the adventure? Then jump in the bus and let is go to Cape Tribulation, a town at the north of Carins. If I considered Cairns wild, well I had to change my opinion after I saw Cape Tribulation surrounded by the rainforest, which arrives until the beaches and the accessibility was guaranteed only by a small street crossed by a stream. During the way to go to Cape Tribulation the weather was not so good as it slightly rained. Once we arrived to the main camp, the sun seemed to be back so we decided to go to the beach. Everyone has been impressed by the number of crocodile warnings, somehow them where close to any place with water around, I have to be honest with you, during the way to the beach most of us were a bit afraid about it, so we particularly payed attention on what was around us. The beaches are a bit wild compared to the others because where it finish the rain forest, it stated the beach. Unluckily the nature gave us only a hour with the sun, just before an incredible storm, if I jumped into a swimming pool I would have been less wet, anyway as the rain keep on falling down so we made a party in the swimming pool!!! No one cared as we were all wet… The rain stopped only the day after around 12.00am and changed our timetable because it was already the time to move to the Daintree River. Now do you remember the small street crossed by the stream? Well the stream became a river and flooded the street, now the water level was about 40 cm above the street, I will not tell you what a laugh for crossing the river, luckily the bus did not betray us and we achieved it!!! As soon as we arrived at the Daintree River we boarded on the boat and we started the rise of the river with the hope to fine a crocodile which we manage to find 🙂 The only rule during the tour was: Do not lean out of the boat and as they say here “you can swim in the river, for once…”

Chillagoe

Per la storia dell’Australia il paesino di Chillagoe è stato uno dei più importanti negli anni che precedevano la prima guerra mondiale grazie alle sue miniere dove si estraeva il rame. Oggigiorno Chillagoe conta circa 220 abitanti ed è il classico paesino sperduto nel nulla e quando dico sperduto, intendo nel vero senso della parola, visto che per raggiungere un altro centro abitato servono almeno 200 Km in una direzione e più di 500 nell’altra, inoltre è uno di quei posti dove non ci si deve trovare in caso di temporali, visto l’alto contenuto di metallo nel suolo  potete capire i fulmini che ci sono…. Questo tour è stato particolarmente interessante perchè oltre alla miniera abbiamo viso posti dove le roccie sfidavano la legge di gravità, grotte dei nativi,  abbiamo visitato la casa di uno dei più famosi collezionisti di Ford al mondo, pensate che aveva un modello che conservava in una specie di pallone trasparente, del valore di circa $ 1.5 millioni. La sera, dopo aver guardato il tramonto, abbiamo organizzato un campeggio coi fiocchi con tanto di fuoco, musica e tutto il necessario per passare una bella serata ed è in quella occasione che ho provato i marshmallow cotti sul fuoco, come i classici campeggi che si vedono nei film, ragazzi i marshmallow meritano tantissimo!!!

For the Australian history the small town of Chillagoe had been one of the most important town during the years before the 1rst world war thanks to its copper mines. Nowadays Chillagoe has about 220 inhabitants and is the classic town located in the middle of nothing and when I say nothing, I really mean nothing as you must drive for at least 200 Km in one direction and more than 500 Km in the other direction to find another town, moreover Chillagoe is not the right place to be during a storm because the ground as a high concentration of metals, so you might imagine the amount of lightnings here… This tour was interesting because we saw a lot of places such as the copper mine, places were the stones fight against the gravity’s law, the natives’ caves and we went to one of the most important ford’s car collector of the world, this guy owns a car which is into a kind of transparent balloon and it is about priceless, the value of this car is about $ 1.5 million. During the evening we watched the sunset and then we organized our camping place with a good fire, sound and everything is needed to spend a great night. That night I ate for the first time the marshmallow burned into the fire, like the classic camping which you watch on the movies and guys the marshmallow are amazing, what a taste!!!

Fitzroy Island

Tralasciando la disavventura avuta su quest’isola (ve la racconto in seguito) Fitzroy Island è stata senza dubbio l’isola più bella in cui sia stato. Tutto è nato dalla voglia di evadere un po’ dalla quotidianità così una sera io e Jaro (l’altro sstudente che viveva con me) abbiamo deciso di bigare la scuola il giorno dopo e farci un giorno diverso dal solito. Una volta giunti sull’isola il piano era quello di girarla a piedi la mattina e rilassarci in spiaggia il pomeriggio. Partiamo subito alla scoperta dell’isola, sembrava di essere come in un film, con spiaggie fantastiche e l’entroterra tutto da scoprire, inutile dire che all’interno sembrava di essere in mezzo alla giungla, comunque per nulla intimoriti da questo, ci inoltriamo nell’entroterra fino a trovare un sentiero, seguendolo siamo arrivati ad una spiaggia meravigliosa, mai visto un posto così bello e stranamente il piano della giornata è cambiato, la sosta la facciamo qui! Terminata la “siesta” partiamo in direzione del faro, che è anche il punto più alto dell’isola, per arrivarci vi era un sentiero immerso nella vegetazione, ed ecco l’incontro inatteso, stavo facendo alcune foto della vegetazione ed all’improvviso sento un sibilo stile serpente, mi fermo subito ed il mio pensiero è stato “Oh merda, ora che diavolo di serpente velenoso c’è qui?” Muovo lentamente la testa per capire da dove arriva il sibilo e cosa mi trovo accanto, un goana di circa 2 metri, si avete letto bene, 2 metri! Mantenendo il sangue freddo mi sono allontanato lentamente dal rettile ed ogniuno continuò per la propria strada, ragazzi ma che paura all’inizio!!! La giornata termina con una bruciatura colossale, complice il fatto che ci siamo addormentati sotto il sole cocente.

Beside the misadventure I had on this island (I will talk about it later) Fitzroy Island is the best island I have ever visited. Everything born from the fancy of escaping from the routine, so a evening Jaro and me (Jaro is the other student who lives with me) decided to skip the next school day and try something different. The plan of the day was “exploring the island in the morning and chilling on a beach in the afternoon”. We started to discover the island, it seemed to be like in a movie, with amazing beaches and a wild and undiscovered hinterland, you could imagine how it looks the hinterland, it is like a jungle, anyway we started our discover of the island without fears and we went into the deep hinterland until we found a trail which brought us to a magnificent beach, I have never seen such a beautiful scenery and somehow our day plan changed, we make a break here!!! At the end of the break we walked in direction of the lighthouse, which is in the highest point of the island. The only way to reach it is a small trail which is surrounded by the vegetation, and on this trail happened the unexpected meeting, I was taking some photos when I heard a sound like a hiss of a snake, I did not moved anymore and I thought “Oh shit, what hell of poisonous snake is here?” I slowly moved my head for understanding from where the sound came and what I found beside me, a huge goana, it was about 2 meters, yes you read right, 2 meters! I kept calm and I kindly went away from the reptile, at the end both of us kept on going to the own way, but guys what a fright!!! The day ended with a big sunburn as we felt asleep under the sun.

Great Barrier Reef

E come direbbe Marlin (il padre di nemo) pronti per il salto nel blu?
Ovviamente sì!!! Era con un po’ di impazienza che attendevo questo weekend dedicato allo scuba diving, che era anche la parte finale delle mie lezioni per ottenere il PADI Open Water; quindi sveglia presto e via in direzione del porto per salire sulla barca. Ad attenderci lì vi era il nostro istruttore, giusto il tempo per la colazione e poi giù nel locale attrezzatura per scegliere il nostro equipaggiamento, fatto questo l’istruttore ci ha fornito le ultime raccomandazioni / spiegazioni per la nostra prima immersione. Ed eccoci qui, in fila dietro l’altro pronti a tuffarsi nel mare da circa 4 metri di altezza, bhe non male per essere il primo “salto nel blu”. Per evitare problemi dovuti all’inesperienza la prima discesa è stata eseguita con l’aiuto di una corda, così facendo si evitava di scendere troppo rapidamente e più scendevo e più ero emozionato, stavo per vedere la grande barriera corallina Australiana. Una volta arrivati sul fondo, a circa 15 metri di profondità, l’immancabile foto di gruppo ed i primi esercizi pratici provati in piscina la settimana prima. Finito tutte le lezioni (altre due immersioni) ci è stato consegnata la licenza e finalmente io ed il mio buddy siamo scesi alla scoperta della barriera corallina ed ancora oggi mi ricordo la pace e la tranquillità che provavo quando ero laggiù ad ammirare quei meravigliosi pesci nel loro habitat naturale, un’esperienza DA RIFARE!!!

As he would have said Marlin (Nemo’s father) are you ready for the jump into the deep blue?
Of course yes!!! I was waiting for this scuba diving weekend with a bit of thrilling because it was the end part of my PADI Open Water’s lessons; I woke up early that weekend and I straight took the bus to the jetty. Once arrived there I met my teacher who gave us just the time for a small breakfast and then down to the equipment room for choosing our scuba diving equipment, once done it the instructor gave us the last recommendations / explanations for our first dive. Here we are,  each one behind the other and waiting for our first jump into the sea, the height of the jump was about 4 meters, not bad for the first time. To avoid problem linked to the inexperience,  our first descent was done with the help of a rope, in this way it was impossible for us to go down too fast. As more I went in the depth as more my excitation increased, I was about to see the great barrier reef. Once touched the bottom, at the depth of 15 meters, the photographer took the photo class, thereafter we started the practice exercises which we tested in the pool the week before. At the end of all the exercises (two dives) we got the coveted PADI license and my buddy and I finally could dive by our own the reef. I am still remembering the tranquility I felt when I was down there and the only thing I cared was to watch the magnificent fish whom were swimming in the natural habitat. This is for sure something that I want to do again!!!

Green Island

Sorpresi positivamente dall’esperienza su Fritzroy Island io e Jaro decidiamo di ripetere la bigiata, ma stavolta la meta è Green Island e visto che l’sola è relativamente veloce da visitare, questa volta abbiamo optato per la barca a vela invece del solito speed boat. Il viaggio verso l’isola è stato molto rilassante, inoltre vi è stata la possibilità di fare snorkeling tra gli squaletti di barriera (circa 1.5 metri di lunghezza). Una volta sbarcati sull’isola ci siamo subito resi conto della diversità tra qui e Fritzroy. Green Island è un isola molto più piccola, le spiagge anche se sono comunque affascinanti, non sono belle come quelle di Fitzroy, inoltre nella maggior parte dell’isola vi sono i coralli taglienti vicino a riva, quindi di fare il bagno non se ne parla, percontro essendoci coralli si possono ammirare da vicino molti tipi di pesci, la vegetazione nell’entro terra è molto simile. Qui vi è anche un centro per coccodrilli dove l’attrazione principale è Cassius Clay, un coccodrillo d’acqua salata di 5.5 metri per un peso approssimativo di quasi 1’000 Kg, oltre ad avere almeno 100 anni, questo coccodrillo detiene il record di cocccodrillo più grande al mondo in cattività, è enorme fidatevi!!!

Positively surprised by the Fritzroy’s trip,  Jaro and me decided to skip the school again, but this time the destination was Green Island and as this island is relatively fast to be visited, we turned our choice to a sailing boat instead of the classic speed boat. The cruise to the island were really relaxing and through the journey we had the chance to swim with the reef sharks (about 1.5 meters length). Since we did our first steps on the island, we understood the big difference between here and Fritzroy. Green Island is far smaller than Fritzroy, even if the beaches are fascinating it did not offer such wonderful beaches as in Fitzroy, even more the majority of the beaches have the reef close to the shore, and the corals are really sharp, so you might have to forget a swim here, in the other hand as there is the reef, you can watch a huge variety of fish from close places, the vegetation is similar to the one in the other island. Here there is even a crocodile center where the main attraction is Cassius Clay, a 5.5 meters salt water crocodile who weighs about 1’000 Kg, has more than 100 years old and is known to be the world’s biggest captive crocodile, it is freaking huge, trust me!!!

Kurranda

Kurranda è stato l’ultimo tour qui a Cairns e segnava anche la fine di un’epoca perchè il mio prossimo soggiorno non sarebbe più stato all’insegna divertimento ma piuttosto dello studio. Senza pensare troppo a questo io e Jaro siamo saliti sul treno, salendo verso Kurranda il treno è passato in posti molto suggestivi, senza calcolare la fermata alle cascate Barron. Kurranda è famosa per l’immensa voliera dei pappagalli e la voliera delle farfalle, attrazioni che non potevamo non fare. I pappagalli nella voliera erano praticamente addomesticati, ti salivano sulle braccia, sulle spalle, potevi accarezzarli senza problema ed addirittura nutrirli con il mangiare che distribuivano all’entrata, l’unica contro indicazione è che agli amici pennuti piaceva mordere braccialetti, collane, orologi, ecc… quindi era opportuno toglierli, purtroppo mi sono dimenticato al polso il braccialetto in gomma della scuola, bhe il pappagallo blù si è divertito un mondo a distruggermelo… Per quanto riguarda la voliera delle farfalle, loro non erano così socevoli e si tenevano a distanza, però migliaia di farfalle che ti volavano attorno erano qualcosa d’indescrivibile, peccato che era quasi impossibile scattare delle foto decenti, visto che non stavano ferme nemmeno un secondo! Visto che c’era rimasto un po’ di tempo l’abbiamo sfruttato per visitare il villaggio per poi ritorare a Cairns con la funivia, che passa sopra la foresta ed offre un’ampia visuale del verde che ci circondava, oltre alla visuale all’alto di Cairns e dintorni.

Kurranda was my last tour in Cairns and it even meant the end of an era because my next location would not have been based on the fun part but more on the studying part. Without thinking too much about it Jaro and me drop on the train to Kurranda. During the journey the train passed through really suggestive landscapes such as the Barron Falls. Kurranda is known for its huge parrot aviary and the butterfly aviary too, attractions that we could not miss. The parrots into the aviary are piratically domesticated, they climb up to our harms and shoulders, you can stroke them without problem and you can even feed them with the food which was distributed at the entrance, the only thing you should pay attention is the fact that they love to bite necklaces, bracelets, watches and everything similar, so it is really recommended to take this items off. Unluckily I did not take off my rubber school bracelet and the blue parrot was really amused while he was destroying it… After the parrots we moved to the butterfly aviary, the butterflies are not as sociable as the parrots so they keep a bit of distance from us, but the seeing of thousand of butterflies while they are flying around you is something that you can not describe, what a shame it was nearly impossible to take good photos of them as the keep on moving! Once out of the aviaries we had only the time to a short tour of the city and then we go back to Cairns with the cable car which pass on the rain forest so that you have an amazing view of the green around you and a good view of Cairns’ area from the top.
