About Manly

Manly è stata la mia ultima tappa di studio in Australia, ed è in questa cittadina che ho frequentato il corso per la preparazione al Cambridge FCE. Al contrario delle altre sedi, qui a Manly c’era l’invasione degli Svizzeri tedeschi, simpaticissimi per carità, ma purtroppo quando uscivo in compagnia con loro il 90% delle discussioni erano in Switzerdeutsch, quindi mi sentivo un po tagliato fuori, ma non è stato un problema, ho comunque trovato molte persone con cui parlare l’inglese ed inoltre se uscivo solo con alcuni Svizzeri tedeschi,allora loro mi parlavano inglese. La famiglia che mi ospitava era composta Alan che discende da una delle più antiche famiglie Australiane, da Rose che arrivava dall’Italia, dal figlio John che è un mezzo campione di baseball a dalla figlia Elisabeth che è una grandissima chiaccherona, con lei potevi parlare ore senza problemi e mentre lo facevi ti aiutava con l’inglese. Malny è famosissima per la sua spiaggia, fantastica secondo me (soprattuto perchè la scuola era a due passi e mangiavamo sempre in spiaggia), oltre che per nuotare e prendere il sole, Manly beach era ottima per il surf ed a circa 1.5 kg di distanza vi era Shelly beach, perfetta per fare i BBQ o feste con gli amici, l’unico contro è che non si potevano consumare alcoolici, o almeno, non nella bottiglia origina 🙂 Waterfront è la via dello shopping qui a Manly, praticamente trovavi tutto quello che volevi e se non lo trovavi qui, potevi andare a Sydney, che è molto vicina, bastano solo 20 minuti con la ferry, peccato che dopo la 1 di mattina si doveva tornare in taxi o in bus.

Manly was my last study location in Australia and it is in this town that I attended the class for the preparation of the Cambridge FCE exams. The Manly’s school was different from the others because here there was the Swiss-German people invasion, I have nothing against them but when I went out with them almost 90% of the discussions were in Switzerdeutsch, so I felt a bit cut out, but it has not been a problem as I found many other people whom spoke English with me and when I went out only with few Swiss-German people, then they spoke English with me. I was guested by a family composed by Alan who came from one of the oldest Australian’s family, Rose who came from Italy, John who is a kind of baseball champion and Elisabeth who is a big chatter, you might speak with her for hours without problems and meanwhile she helps you with the English. Manly is known for its beach, in my opinion awesome (especially because it was really close to the school and we used to eat our lunch on the beach), moreover in Manly  you could swim, get tanned and if you wish, you can even surf here. 1.5 Km far from Manly beach there is Shelly beach which is perfect for the BBQ or party with friends, the only negative point is that the alcohol is not allowed, or better, not allowed in the original bottles 🙂 Waterfront is the shopping street of Manly, you may find everything and if you do not find it here, you can go to Sydney, which is really close, you need only 20 minutes by ferry, unluckily the ferry stops at 1am and then you must take the cab or the bus to go back.

Sydney

Bhe Sydney è Sydney, c’è poco da dire su Syndey oltre a tutte le info già presente in rete, l’attrazione turistica più conosciuta al mondo è la opera house, il tetto dell’edificio, la cui forma un po il guscio delle conchiglie, potrebbe sembrare di un colore unico, ma se si osserva bene da vicino i pannelli che compongono il tetto sono di due tonalità differenti, una bianca e l’altra marroncino chiaro. L’interno dell’edificio contiene la sala per l’opera che è stata spesso criticata per la scarsa sonorità. L’altra attrazione turistica più popolare è l’harbour bridge, ovvero un ponte ad arco che collega il CBD (central business district) con la parte settentrionale di Sydney. Questo ponte è stato costruito nella decade del 1920 ed oggi giorno è teatro dei magnifici fuochi d’artificio di capodanno, famosi in tutto il mondo.

Well Sydney is Sydney, there is not much more to tell about Sydney than the information that you can find in internet. The most important tourist attraction is the opera house, the roof of the building, with the shape similar the a shell, seems uni color but if you have a look from a closer point you notice that in fact the panels which composes the roof are made by two different color, the white and the matte cream. The interior of the building contains the opera hall which has been criticized for its bad sonority. An other and popular tourist attraction is the Harbour bridge, which is an arch bridge made to link the CBD (central business district) to the northern part of Sydney. This bridge had been build during the decade of the years 1920, nowadays this bridge is theater of the new year’s firework, known in the whole word.

New year’s eve

Sydney è una delle prime grandi metropoli al mondo a festeggiare l’anno nuovo e come potrete immaginare non vuole fare una brutta figura. Io ed i miei amici siamo arrivati all’opera House già verso mezzogiorno per assicurarci un posto in prima fila, se arrivavi alle 14.00 dovevi già cercarti un posto “lontano”. Lo show costa circa $ 5 millioni ed è composto da due spettacoli, il primo è alle 22.00 ed è dedicato alle persone che non voglione/possono attendere fino all’anno nuovo, questa sessione dura circa 4 minuti mentre quello principale inizia esattamente allo scoccare della mezzanotte e dura circa 8 – 10 minuti, ma quello che impressiona di più, oltre alla bellezza dei fuochi d’artificio in se, è la quantità che viene sparata in aria dalle varie postazioni.

Sydney is one of the first metropolis on the world which celebrates the new year and as you might think, it did not want to do a bad impression. My friends and me arrived at the Opera House around midday for getting the best place to watch the fireworks because if you arrive at 14.00 you might find only far places. The fireworks display costs about $ 5 millions and it is subdivided in two shows. The first show takes places at 22.00 and it is dedicated to those people whom do not want to stay until the new year , the show lasts about 4 minutes while the main show starts exactly at midnight and lasts between 8 and 10 minutes, but what let me breathless it was not the magnificent of the fireworks but the amount of fireworks which were shot in the sky from the nearby lunch places.

Blue Montains

Le blue montains sono senza ombra di dubbio una tappa obbligatoria se vi trovate dalle parti di Sydney, potete scegliere tra diversi tipi di gite, io ho scelto quella che prevede una bella passeggiata della durata totale di circa 5 ore, chiaramente la guida turistica ci ha concesso molte pause per poter riposare ed ammirare le blue montains e scattare qualche foto. Ovviamente, considerando il fatto che in totale si cammina circa 5 ore, la gita non è consigliata a chi ha problemi fisici, ma per chi non lì ha vi garantisco che gli scenari che vedrete camminanto attraverso alla vegetazione valgono sicuramente lo sforzo fisico. Ovviamente la meteo gioca un ruolo fondamentale ed io devo dire che non potevo essere più fortunato di così, caldo sì, ma non troppo e con una leggera brezza rinfrescante. Per quel che riguarda le montagne in se, vi lascio guardare le foto, penso che ogni mio commento in merito sia superfluo…

The blue montains is without any shadow of doubt a must do if you are around Sydney, you can choose between different type of tours, I my chase I chose the walking tour which makes you walk for about 5 hours, obviously the tour guide gave us a lot of brakes so then we could rest, admire the landscape and take some photos. Now you can understand that kind of tour is not recommended for those whom have physic problems as you must walk for about 5 hours but if you do not have physic problems the beauty of the landscapes that you might see while you are walking through the vegetation are more worth than the physical effort which you spend for the walk. The weather is really important as well, I could have not been luckier than the day I went as it was hot but not heat and there was a refreshing breeze. What about the montain? Well I will let you watch the photos because I think that any word I will say it might be worthless…

Chinese Garden

Le gite organizzate qui a Manly scarseggiavano un po’ quindi nei weekend ne approfittavo per rilassarmi in spiaggia, fare qualche BBQ, andare a Sydney oppure come in questo caso per cercare un po di pace e tranquillità lontano dai libri di scuola. Il Chinese Garden mi dava quel senso di armonia nelle cose, nella composizione del giardino c’è un perfetto equilibrio tra acqua, piante ed architettura, insomma un ottimo posto per rilassarsi, svuotare la mente e bersi un bel the caldo.

Here in Manly there is not a lot of organized tours choice, that is why during the weekends I had taken advantage of the situation for chilling on the beach, having BBQ, going to Sydney, or like in this case searching some peace and quiet far from the school books. The Chinese Garden gave me this feeling of harmony, in the composition of the garden there is a perfect balance between water, trees and buildings, in other words a good place to be where you can have a bit of relax, clear your mind  and having a hot tea.

South Cost Tample

Il Nan Tien Temple è il più grande templio buddista del sud Australia, il nome di questo tipico tempio Cinese significa “il paradiso del sud” ed è stato costruito per permettere lo scambio di culture tra differenti popoli e lo sviluppo spirituale. Pur non avendo un tempo soddisfacente, la visita del templio è stata abbastanza interessante, anche se a dir la verità ero più interessato ai vari giardini attorno al templio, forse perchè la natura mi affascina di più delle creazioni umane. Purtroppo a causa della pioggia le mete previste durante l’andata ed il ritorno dal templio non sono state un gran che, in alcuni casi la nebbia copriva completamente tutta la costa, quindi potete capire cosa si vedeva…

The Nan Tien Tample is the biggest Buddhist temple on the south Australia, the name of this traditional Chinese temple means “paradise of the south” and it was build for cultures exchange and spiritual development between different countries. Even if the day tour the weather was not good, the visit to the temple was relatively interesting, but to be honest I was more interested in the gardens than the temple, maybe it is because I am more attracted by the nature than the human creations.  Unluckily the rain damaged our trip as the places we wanted to see during the way to the temple and the way back to the temple were not so good, that might be because the fog covered the whole coast so you might understand what we saw….
